The Oscar envelopes and announcement cards that contain names of winners of the most coveted honour in movie industry are getting a facelift.Breaking away from a 70-year routine, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will this year use a glamourous gold envelope at the 83rd Academy Awards instead of the plain, white paper envelope, the kind available at any office supply store.”The envelopes are such an integral part of the Academy Awards, yet there has never been a dramatic, specially designed envelope and card to announce the Oscar recipients,” telecast producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer said in a statement. The new custom-designed, handcrafted keepsake envelopes and announcement cards have been made by Los Angeles-based custom stationer Marc Friedland. The envelopes are made of “iridescent” gold paper watermarked with little images of Oscar. It is lined with shiny red paper embossed with gold Oscars. The winner’s name appears on a heavy piece of lacquered red paper inside, with the category listed on front and back. The envelope will be sealed with a shiny red sticker adorned with two strips of red ribbon.”The Art Deco-inspired satin gold envelope will contain a heavyweight ecru card featuring gold foil accents and a gold leaf-embossed Oscar statuette along with the phrase – ‘And the Oscar goes to…’,” the statement said. The winner’s name on the announcement card would be printed in charcoal ink and mounted onto a matching, red lacquer hand-wrapped frame. The back of the card will be printed with the award category.advertisementTill now, the envelopes were printed on heavy cream-coloured stock, with plain block letters sporting the name of the category and, inside, the phrase ‘And the Oscar goes to’ and the winner’s name and film. The Academy has been using sealed envelopes for the last 70 years after a winner’s name had leaked out early once.Friedland, whose company Marc Friedland Couture Communications has designed high-end invitations for the past 25 years, said in spite of the Oscar envelope being the most “iconic” and “symbolic” envelope in the world, “it was funny that it was the most non-descript, office supply store bought” till now.”At the end of the day, the event is a celebration of an amazing accomplishment. We wanted to bring back the elegance and glamour. The design concept was to be timeless, regal and rich and luxe… the envelope serves as an iconic symbol of that moment,” Friedland added.Friedland got the envelope assignment two weeks ago.He took design cues from the look of this year’s Oscar set. He will prepare cards bearing the names of each of this year’s nominees. After the ballots are tabulated, partners at PricewaterhouseCoopers will prepare two complete sets of correct envelopes, and destroy the remaining cards. This year, the Academy is also returning to the phrase ‘And the Oscar goes to…’ after a one-year experiment with ‘And the winner is…’ to announce who wins the award.

He also had no record of receiving a flu vaccination, according to the county. The other four residents had additional medical issues and ranged from 47 to 90 years old.County officials confirmed 675 flu cases last week, beating the previous season high of 618 cases. Last week’s case total is also a 21 percent jump over the previous week’s 536 cases. Because of the continued flu activity levels, the county extended its order for unvaccinated health care workers to wear a mask in patient care areas to the end of April. The county Health and Human Services Agency has confirmed 54 flu deaths and 7,886 influenza cases so far this season. At this point last year, county officials had confirmed 318 deaths and 19,841 cases.“People should continue getting vaccinated and taking other preventative measures, especially those at higher risk of developing complications,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer. “In addition to getting vaccinated, people should practice good hand hygiene.”County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions.Recent flu seasons have extended as late into the year as May, according to county health officials.Flu shots are available at doctors’ offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county’s public health centers. Residents can also call 211 or visit the county’s immunization program website, sdiz.org, for a list of county locations administering free vaccines. KUSI Newsroom, KUSI Newsroom

Blazars, classified as members of a larger group of active galaxies that host active galactic nuclei (AGN), are the most numerous extragalactic gamma-ray sources. Their characteristic features are relativistic jets pointed almost exactly toward the Earth. In general, blazars are perceived by astronomers as high-energy engines serving as natural laboratories to study particle acceleration, relativistic plasma processes, magnetic field dynamics and black hole physics.Studies show that high-redshift blazars (with redshifts above 2.0) hosting massive black holes and the most powerful relativistic jets are the most luminous ones. Finding and observing new blazars at high redshifts could be crucial for providing insights into many phenomena of the universe, including the evolution and space density of massive black holes.A team of researchers led by Vaidehi S. Paliya of DESY research center in Zeuthen, Germany, investigated one such high-redshift blazar. They used the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and other instruments to characterize physical properties DA 193 – a blazar observed close to the galactic anti-center at a redshift of approximately 2.36. These observations resulted in the detection of significant gamma-ray emission from this object.”In this work, we present the results of our study on another high-redshift blazar DA 193 (also known as 0552+398; z = 2.363, Wills & Wills 1976; McIntosh et al. 1999) which we have found as a new gamma-ray emitting object through our detailed Fermi-LAT analysis,” the researchers wrote in the paper.DA 193 underwent a significant GeV flare in the first week of 2018. According to the study, it was an extremely luminous gamma-ray flare with a luminosity of about 130 quindecillion erg/s. The researchers note that such a GeV flare from a high-redshift blazar is a rare phenomenon. This is due to the fact that these blazars are generally faint in the gamma-ray band.Notably, DA 193 has an extremely hard gamma-ray spectrum. “What makes this event a rare one is the observation of an extremely hard γ-ray spectrum (photon index = 1.7 ± 0.2), which is somewhat unexpected since high-redshift blazars typically exhibit a steep falling spectrum at GeV energies,” the paper reads.Trying to determine what caused such an intense and luminous flare from DA 193, the astronomers suggest that a change in the behavior of the underlying electron population could be responsible for the observed event. The team intends to use LAT for further continuous monitoring of the gamma-ray sky in order to find more powerful blazars showcasing luminous flares like DA 193. Studying such events could lead to a better understanding of radiative processes powering relativistic jets in blazars. Kolkata: State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs minister and Mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday criticised BJP for its dubious attempts to induct leaders from other parties.Hakim also reminded that not a single Trinamool Congress leader will join BJP despite its attempts. He said: “Those who consider politics as business can shift their loyalty from one party to other. But those who have grown up with the ideals of Trinamool Congress will never join another party.” Also Read – Bose & Gandhi: More similar than apart, says Sugata Bose”Trinamool Congress was formed by Mamata Banerjee with values and ideals. Those who are familiar with the values propagated by our party will never join any other party. People of the state have seen how Banerjee has fought for them. They have seen how the developments have taken place in the state after Banerjee became the Chief Minister,” Hakim said. He also said that as the BJP has no foothold in the state, it would always try to induct leaders from other parties through various means. He also addressed the CPI-M leaders in this regard, saying: “How can the people who are supposed to believe in the communist ideology join a communal party like BJP?”
December 31, 2014 New York City is weighing new legislation that would enable drivers to instantaneously pay for parking tickets via Apple Pay, mobile apps and even Bitcoin. The city collects roughly $600 million from 10 million parking tickets annually, according to MarketWatch. However, the current payment system is rather outdated: offenders can only pay online, through the mail or in person at the courthouse. And if they don’t pay on time, late fees begin to accrue. This, along with a 2.5 percent credit and debit card fee, could change with the use of mobile apps and cryptocurrencies. While no mobile options are currently available, the city also believes a revamped system would ultimately cut down on the losses it incurs each year from unpaid violations.New York City’s finance department is reportedly envisioning an “aesthetically pleasing” mobile interface by which drivers could either take a picture of their tickets or scan barcodes to make one-click payments, MarketWatch reports. While no solid plans are in place, the city issued a Request for Information about such a system due on Jan. 15. This will help the city understand “the current market environment for mobile payment options” and whether this is a feasible solution for parking tickets.Related: Microsoft Is Now the Largest Company in the World to Accept Bitcoin Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now 2 min read This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience.
