The special CBI court here is likely to pass an order on the bail plea of Indrani Mukerjea, a prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, on December 10.Indrani had applied for bail on health grounds around six months ago before special Judge J.C. Jagdale, and this is her fourth attempt at seeking bail.Making his submission on Saturday, Indrani’s lawyer Tanveer Ahmed reiterated that she is suffering from a “terminal illness” and her condition is “deteriorating”.Also Read Indrani’s medical condition irreversible, says her lawyer He argued that there was a change in circumstance since her last bail plea was rejected about a year ago.At least 36 witnesses have been examined during this period, and Indrani has been suffering from frequent blackouts, he said.Countering the prosecution’s claim that Indrani may influence witnesses if released on bail, Ahmed said the court can give her an interim bail for certain period and check her conduct.Earlier, the prosecution had argued that since September 2018 (when she had applied for bail), there is no new report indicating that her health has worsened and she is critical.Indrani is accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora, with the help of two other accused, in April 2012.The matter came to light in August 2015, after her driver Shyamvar Rai confessed to the crime following his arrest in an arms case.It led to the arrest of Indrani and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna.Peter Mukerjea, Indrani’s husband at that time, was later arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder conspiracy.

I don’t need to know now what will be in May. Who can’t really live with the time between now and May? Go on holiday and switch everything off then come back in May and see what happened. “We want to help unaffected growers get back into production and enable stores and consumers to re-stock. One goal we’re seeking is to make this type of labeling the new standard rather than a short-term fix; as a way to improve identification and traceability in the system.” Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The romaine lettuce responsible for an E. coli outbreak that sickened more than 30 people across multiple states likely originated in California, according to Food and Drug Administration. They are currently working with growers and distributors on labeling produce with a “post-purge” date to inform consumers that certain products are now safe to eat. States affected by the outbreak include California (which had the highest number of cases — 10), Michigan, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Wisconsin. Two days before Thanksgiving, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a food safety alert saying 32 people across 11 states had become sick because of contaminated romaine lettuce. The CDC is advising people avoid romaine lettuce completely. “New romaine from different growing regions, including Florida and Arizona, will soon be harvested,” the FDA tweeted. “We’re working with growers and distributors on labeling produce for location and harvest date and possibly other ways of informing consumers that the product is ‘post-purge’” The FDA is hoping to create a new labeling standard that would require companies to show where lettuce is from and when it is harvested.

Now playing: Watch this: Pichai’s comments comes as Google and the rest of the tech industry face a fresh wave of scrutiny from US lawmakers and regulators. Last week, the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department reportedly reached a new agreement, with the FTC gaining authority to review Amazon and Facebook and the Justice Department looking into Apple and Google. This deal is seen as an early step in these agencies’ efforts to dig into potential anticompetitive practices. State attorneys general are gearing up to investigate big tech, too. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Democratic presidential candidate, is calling for a breakup of Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook, arguing that they’ve become so powerful that they’re stifling competition and innovation. She even put up a “Break Up Big Tech” billboard in San Francisco, right in the heart of the tech industry. When asked about Warren’s call to break up big tech, Pichai said there needs to be “healthy, thoughtful conversations” on how to regulate the industry.”There are many countries around the world which aspire to be the next Silicon Valley,” Pichai told CNN. “And they are supporting their companies, too. So we have to balance both. This doesn’t mean you don’t scrutinize large companies. But you have to balance it with the fact that you want big, successful companies as well.”Google said it had no further comment to add. 2:38 Can big tech actually be broken up? Comments Google Sundar Pichai Tags Google is reportedly facing a possible antitrust probe. James Martin/CNET As calls to break up large tech companies get louder, Google CEO Sundar Pichai says scrutiny is fair but that regulating technology just “for the sake of regulating it” could create problems.”I worry that if you regulate for the sake of regulating it, it has a lot of unintended consequences,” Pichai told CNN’s Poppy Harlow in an interview published Friday. “You know, if you take a technology like artificial intelligence, it will have implications for our national security and … other important areas of society.” Share your voice Politics 2
Al Qaeda terrorists [Representational Image]ReutersAl-Qaeda has strong ties with Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Haqqani Network, according to a new UN report. It also said that the deteriorating health of leader Aiman Muhammed al-Zawahiri has raised an alarm on the issue of succession. “Al-Qaeda remains resilient, although the health and longevity of its leader, Aiman Muhammed Rabi al-Zawahiri, and how the succession will work are in doubt,” said the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team report. It was submitted to the UN Security Council Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee. The report also said that the terror group considers Afghanistan as a “safe haven” and deeply relies on the strong relations with the Taliban. “Under Taliban patronage, Al-Qaeda is keen to strengthen its presence in Badakhshan Province, in particular in the Shighnan area bordering Tajikistan, as well as in Barmal, in Paktika Province”, the report said. According to a previous report on LeT and Islamic State working with Pakistani intelligence agency in Afghanistan, officials have claimed that the terrorist group’s presence in the region has risen over the years. “LeT’s presence in Afghanistan has been observed to be steadily on the rise. According to recent inputs, Hafiz Saeed’s son Talha Saeed is taking more interest in operational affairs in Afghanistan,” an intelligence official told Hindustan Times. ISIL and the Al-QaidaThe report also compared Al-Qaeda’s influence with the emerging presence of another terrorist group, Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).The ISIL, who gained recognition for carrying out the Sri Lankan Sunday terror attack, was reported to strengthen its network in remote provinces using “a logical extension of the dispersed, delegated leadership approach.” Islamic State released a video of the terror squad responsible for the Easter Sunday massacre.”Better established affiliates are taking on elements of responsibility for lesser ones, channelling funds and assisting with propaganda. Over time, this may have the effect of regionalising the agendas of these networks,” it added. On the other hand, Al-Qaeda has a successfully established network through its engagement in local issues and politics. It noted that the largest concentration of active foreign terrorists in Idli and Afghanistan were largely aligned with the Al-Qaida. However, it is noted that the group has some issues in the Syrian city, Idlib. While the report says that the Al-Qaeda’s allies are stronger than their ISIL counterparts in Idlib, Syrian Arab Republic, Yemen, Somalia and a majority of West Africa, it said that ISIL is a much greater threat to global security. In terms of finances, media profile, current combat experience and terrorist expertise, the UN report noted that ISIL remains much stronger than Al-Qaeda.
Sachin and Kambli in the videoTwitterThe story of Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli’s friendship is legendary. However, in the last decade, their relationship went through some turmoil due to certain statements from Kambli. However, the two men seem to have put the past behind them. Their Twitter posts have been oozing with that same spirit of bonding which saw them put up a world record partnership in their school days.On Friendship Day, the Master Blaster posted a video on his Twitter timeline which shows the two old buddies engaged in a friendly cricket video game contest. This video is indeed special as it has the former Indian cricketers eschewing that spirit of friendliness which makes you realise that while they may have grown up, somewhere in their heart, they still have the same child-like enthusiasm.Happy #FriendshipDay guys… always remember that there are ‘No boundaries’ in friendship! ?@vinodkambli349 pic.twitter.com/qe6hT7Y7lx— Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) August 4, 2019 TwitterThe video ends in a special way also. A Jet Airways Boeing 777-300ER taxis at San Francisco International Airport, San Francisco, California, February 16, 2015.Reuters fileEven though Jet Airways has been in talks with several investors to raise funds, local credit rating agency ICRA has downgraded its long-term ratings to C from B-. The short-term rating of the carrier had been kept at A4.The rating has been downgraded to C, keeping in mind the full-service airline’s debt instruments such as long-term loans of about Rs 49.70 billion, fund-based facilities Rs 6.45 billion, and non-convertible debenture programme of Rs 6.98 billion, to name a few.”The rating downgrade considers delays in the implementation of the proposed liquidity initiatives by the management, further aggravating its liquidity, as reflected in the delays in employee salary payments and lease rental payments to the aircraft lessors,” the Week quoted ICRA analysts as saying.Jet Airways too confirmed the downgrade in a regulatory filing.Debt instruments with a C rating are considered to have a very high risk of default, while A4 rating is allowed to those instruments that are said to have minimal degree of safety, when it comes to timely payment. After Jet Airways’ rating was downgraded to C, the carrier’s shares slipped about 2.4 percent intraday on Friday, December 7. At about 3 pm, Jet shares were valued at Rs Rs 276.10 at the Bombay Stock Exchange.Meanwhile, ICRA had warned of a downgrade, before it made a decision and an official had said that many of the carrier’s fund-raising plans hadn’t worked out as expected. “We have undertaken a rating review of Jet Airways as none of the airline’s proposed fund raising plans have materialized yet. This is expected to lead to further financial distress in the company and we are watching the situation closely, a senior official at ICRA, told Arabian Business. The full-service airline has been going through a severe cash crunch for a while now, and has been in talks with several investors to raise funds. Just a few weeks ago it was said that owner Naresh Goyal had turned to Reliance Industries’ chairman Mukesh Ambani. While Reliance Industries has never involved itself in the aviation sector until now, Goyal was said to have gotten in touch with Ambani in his personal capacity.”In the past, Reliance Industries has ruled out any investment in the aviation sector and turned down various offers, including bailing out defunct Kingfisher Airlines, but this time, Goyal has approached Mukesh Ambani in his personal capacity,” a source in the know told LiveMint.Goyal, who owns a 51 percent controlling stake in Jet, was also known to have discussed the offer with chairman emeritus of Tata Group Ratan Tata. Another source told LiveMint that the Tata Group had shown an interest in bailing out Jet Airways, but it depended on Goyal and his willingness in giving up his controlling stake.Jet is also said to have reached out to UAE-based Indian businessman Yusuff Ali MA and Goyal was said to be discussing a bail-out plan with him.Jet Airways CEO Vinay Dube too had revealed that the carrier was trying to secure funding from various sources.”We are in active discussions with various investors to secure sustainable financing to navigate through the current headwinds and create long-term growth. There is interest in our strong brand and confidence in our business turnaround efforts,” he had said in a letter to Jet’s frequent flyers.

The legislation will extend the government’s capacity to collect the correspondence of foreign targets from American cell phone and technology companies without a warrant, including when an American is involved in the conversation.Republicans mostly backed the measure and Democrats largely opposed it. But many members crossed party lines as those from both ends of the political spectrum have raised privacy concerns about domestic surveillance. Some libertarian-minded Texas Republicans voted against it – including U.S. Reps. Michael Burgess of Lewisville, Blake Farenthold of Corpus Christi, Louie Gohmert of Tyler, Ted Poe of Humble, Randy Weber of Friendswood and Roger Williams of Austin. On the Democratic side, U.S. Reps. Henry Cuellar of Laredo and Marc Veasey of Fort Worth voted with Republicans to pass the measure, as did Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. In the larger body, the measure passed 256 to 164. There was serious question earlier in the day over whether the measure would pass at all after President Donald Trump tweeted critically on the policy Thursday morning. He then pulled back an hour and a half later with a subsequent tweet urging lawmakers to reauthorize the program after reportedly speaking with U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan. The legislation still needs to pass the Senate. In a post on Facebook, Poe described the measure as “a flawed reauthorization bill that contains virtually no reforms, violates Americans’ Fourth Amendment rights, and approves warrantless surveillance of our very own citizens.”Cuellar said the program is an important tool for tracking potential terrorists.“I have been a consistent advocate for a strong national defense, and that includes our ability to stop terrorists before they attack,” Cuellar said. “This bill protects our civil liberties without hindering the ability of our intelligence community to monitor terror suspects, analyzes collected data, and, most importantly, keeps us safe.” Share
Conway for ATX CampaignLewis Conway Jr., a candidate running for Austin City Council, is the first formerly incarcerated person in Texas to run for public office. At first glance, it may seem typical that Lewis Conway Jr. got his name on the ballot for a seat on the Austin City Council —he paid the filing fee and turned in his application before the deadline. But Conway’s success Tuesday is unique for one big reason: He’s a convicted felon.Conway, who was convicted in 1993 of voluntary manslaughter, is at the center of a situation Texas has never seen before. According to Texas’ election code, a person is only eligible to run for office if he or she has not been “finally convicted” of a felony “from which the person has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities.”It’s the “resulting disabilities” portion of the code that’s caused people to scratch their heads — there’s no legal precedent defining the term. But after a brief challenge on Friday by the city clerk, Conway has been cleared to continue his campaign.“I am happy that Austin is standing up for the nearly four million Texans affected by our criminal justice system,” Conway said in a statement. “Our campaign is about more than just an election — it’s about diversity in leadership, belief in a fair chance, and bringing the sentence to an end. I have been released from parole and my voting rights have been restored. I have served my time and now I am ready to serve my community.”The statute regarding the eligibility of a felon is one Conway’s campaign called “ambiguous, unchallenged and potentially unconstitutional.” Because there’s no clear definition of resulting disabilities, nor a prior legal case to help determine it, Conway has pressed forward.Sam Taylor, a spokesperson with the Texas Secretary of State’s office, agreed that the issue is unclear and without precedent. And Conway’s case might not end up providing much broader clarity. His opponents vying for the East Austin seat would have had the opportunity to challenge Conway’s candidacy in court, but they told the Austin Chronicle earlier this month that they wouldn’t fight his eligibility. After months of the Conway campaign waiting for a challenge, City Clerk Jannette Goodall sent Conway an email on Friday, citing his inability to meet the requirements to run under the Texas election code. Goodall gave Conway until Tuesday to prove his eligibility. He submitted what he believed was that proof Monday, indicating that he has been released from “resulting disabilities” by serving out his parole and having his voting rights reinstated.A spokesperson with the City of Austin said Goodall met with city attorneys and came to the determination that the city had no reason to question his eligibility. In 1991, Conway stabbed a man at an Austin apartment complex and called the police immediately after the incident, claiming self-defense. He confessed and accepted a plea deal, serving 20 years for the crime. He went on to spend eight years in prison and 12 years on parole before completing his sentence in 2013.Conway, who works as a criminal justice organizer at Grassroots Leadership, says he will make criminal justice reform one of the main focal points of his campaign.
